Does it feel like every time you turn around, you’re being asked to create a new login and password?
Online shopping, forum sites, industry memberships, mailing lists, it goes on and on…It’s often hard enough remembering to have breakfast – let alone remember the endless stream of logins and passwords we need just to get through the day! This is made all the more challenging by individual security requirements like:
- Password length,- MUST contain a number
- MUST contain a special character
- MUST have at LEAST one capital letter
- And (of course) no English words.
Sometimes these systems even want answers to security questions – what if you never had a childhood pet, or you don’t have a favourite ice cream (we like so many equally)!
BUT – Never fear:
Technology is again here to help us with the frustration this problem causes. There are many “password keeper” products on the market these days that can save all your login details…
How does it work?
A password keeper acts like a vault, locking away all your logins behind some form of security like a master password (so you only have to remember ONE), a PIN, a secure phrase or even a touch-ID for those of us who have devices that support that technology.
PC Mag has done a great comparison of password keeper products. The article gives you an idea of which products perform which tasks. You’ve probably noticed Google Chrome and Firefox offering to remember passwords for you, and this is one of the options, but you can also use an external software product that can synch across all your devices – laptop, PC, phone and tablet. These can be quite valuable if you work across multiple platforms, browsers, or locations.
It’s really important to use strong passwords and reset them regularly, to ensure that your information stays safe in an era of motivated hackers and other threats.
But in order to maintain both your security AND your sanity? A password keeper could be just what you’ve been waiting for!
